Emma’s martial arts journey began when she was just nine years old and has continued mostly uninterrupted since she began. Emma first studied Keichu Ryu karate under the instruction of Sensei Dan Gilliland where she achieved the rank of second degree black belt. During her ten years of karate training, she actively competed at the local, state, and national levels in kata, sparring and weapons. She was also responsible for helping with classes and karate camps at the dojo as an instructor. She continued to train as often as possible while in college and started
training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when she moved to Texas to start graduate school in 2008, finding
time to train as often as she could with a busy student’s schedule. She earned her BJJ blue belt in 2011 from Sabumnim Mike Gunnlaugsson. While in the north Texas area, she also had the
opportunity to train at Genesis Jiu Jitsu under the instruction of Albert Hughes and at Mohler
Mixed Martial Arts under the instruction of Allen Mohler. When life finally tried to settle down, Emma started training at Legion of Honor BJJ and MMA under the instruction of Randy Villareal, earning her BJJ purple belt in May 2015. After a jiu jitsu sabbatical, she returned to active training in January 2017 at New Braunfels Training Center, where she currently teaches the Women’s Class.
