Gorgeous antique french cobalt blue enamel with gilt ormolu jewelry casket box by Tahan, Paris dating to late 1800's. Jean-Pierre Tahan (1813-1892) was a major maker of small items, furniture, and cabinets. Manufactured opulent furniture and exquisite table ornaments with the lavish use of costly materials for a wealthy clientele which included the Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, the Empress Eugenie. This fabulous box has hand painted beveled cobalt blue enamel sides and top, curved ornate legs, and gilt ormolu. The inside is tufted cream silk with braided border for the top and bottom and cream silk sides. The box measures 2.5" high, 4.25' long, and 3.25" wide. It is marked on the bottom Tahan Rue de la Pair, which was one of the best shops in Paris in the 1800's. Just some minor wear to the silk. Fabulous one of a kind!
