Wonderful pair of antique brown transferware plates that date to the late 19th century. One plate depicts a scene of french soldiers fighting Africans and has the title Combat de Dogba. It refers to a combat on September 19, 1892 in Dahomey, Africa. The other plate depicts french soldiers marching past Africans and is titled 12. Entree des Francais a Abomey. Abomey was the ancient capital of Dahomey from 1625 to 1900 and sold prisoners of war as slaves to European merchants for shipment to the new world. It is now modern day Benin. Both plates are a wonderful depiction of history of the french in Africa. THe plates measure 8" across and I could find no chips or cracks. There are some faint scratches. Found in Paris, the plates are a wonderful antique pair!
